About the Creator:
Catherine and her 5 children spent 15 years in a refugee camp in Rwanda, she is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo Prior to fleeing to Rwanda, Catherine was a seamstress in her village. In the camp, she was able to use her sewing skills to barter for goods with the other refugees Catherine and her children are now resettled in the United States She sees her participation with OWC as a good use of her skills and a path to earn an income to give her children a better life
About Our Woven Community:
These beautiful, one-of-a-kind items are made by refugee women who have been resettled to Bridgeport, Connecticut. Through the Our Woven Community program, refugee women learn how to sew and are able to earn a small income. Each item is made with one piece of African fabric along with other designer donated fabric and is tagged with the story of the artist who made it. They are beautiful and make an incredible gift!
All proceeds from the sale of this item goes to the Our Woven Community artists and program through the Burroughs Community Center in Bridgeport, CT
